World Café

World Café methodology is a simple, effective and flexible format for hosting large group dialogue. It is a tool we often use for idea building. The World Café is a structured conversational process in which groups of people discuss a topic at several tables, with individuals switching tables periodically and getting introduced to the previous discussion at their new table by the illustrator and moderator. This contributes to the idea at the new table by bringing in newly acquired knowledge from the previous tables.

This methodology encourages diversity of thought and collaboration with no room for judgement. It also allows fresh and new perspectives to come to the table

It encourages diversity of thought and collaboration while setting aside judgement. Allows for fresh, new perspectives on an existing idea.

  • Small Group Rounds: The process begins with 50 participants split into groups of 5. Every table has an illustrator who illustrates the group’s ideas. At the end of 15 minutes, each member of the group moves to a different new table. Switching tables would take place a few times and at each table the new members bring in their individual collective ideas.
  • Harvest: At the end of the rounds individuals are invited to share insights or other results from their conversations and illustrations with the rest of the larger group.
